I bought the very first video game console in my whole life today: an Atari VCS. It's not a complete system though, but just the joystick. At least it looks like that. In fact, this joystick has ten games built in! After plugging it into a TV, it lets you choose between Adventure, Asteroids, Breakout, Centipede, Circus Atari, Gravitar, Missile Command, Pong, Volleyball and Yar's Revenge. The design is exactly like the original joysticks used for the VCS. The games are great of course! Gravitar is my favourite so far, followed closely by Volleyball. If I don't appear here anymore, you know what I'm busy with ;)

And let me guess - it cost you as much as a Dreamcast with 10 games ;)

I have no idea how much a "Dreamcast" with 10 "games" costs...

Depends on where you buy, you can get the console which still many consider to be better than Playstation for $50, including those games.

Do you only use comparisons I can't follow? Anyway, the answer is no - my VCS stick was cheaper. That proves once again how stupid these prices are: good things aren't necessarily more expensive than crap.

Wow, I did not know about this joystick with games built in. Would you mind posting a screenshot?

Damn, how did you ever find that? I love Missile Command, I used to play it on those arcade machines with some kind of huge trackball... Is it just me or is that game insanely difficult? I never played Breakout but it's basically the same thing as Arkanoid, right? Must be fun to be able to play those classics on the TV screen.

One thing though: the idea of Pong with one joystick seems kind of dumb, I don't suppose there's a 2 player mode? Congratulations on your purchase nonetheless.

Man, I love Centipede. I don't know why everybody's favorite classic shooters are Space Invaders or Galaxian when Centipede is infitely better...

Yes it is, but it would be more correct to say Arkanoid is basically the same thing as Breakout, because Breakout was first released in about 1976, Arkanoid came much later - circa 1986.

Arkanoid is Breakout with more balls!

@Mr Creosote

How does Arkanoid play with a joystick? I cant imagine playing the game without using paddles

Ive got Breakout (among other paddle games, most notably Kaboom) on the 2600 and some of them are really good, but when you play them on an emulator and are restricted to either keyboard or joypad/joystick they are absolute rubbish.

I cant imagine Breakout on joystick being any fun at all.

It's available exclusively from Karstadt ;)

Of the games? Sure, I can do that tomorrow. The joystick is on the promotial photo I posted as an attachment in the initial post.

Hmm.... I thought the difficulty was moderate when I played it today. I chose game mode '1' of course which is most likely the easiest though ;)

Yup :) Circus Atari is basically the same as well, only with one nice twist - you'll see that on the screenshot :D

Haven't found one so far ;)

Thanks :)

Centipede is a lot more complex than Space Invaders, that is why I like it better, too. SI is 'purer' though, it is closer to being the epitome of simple fun. Gravitar beats them both though :P

It's incredibly hard! The stick controls aren't exact enough, the ball slips away all the time. I'm not a very skilled player in this anyway, but the control method certainly makes it even harder for me. The same problem (to a lesser extent) occurs in Pong, too. And Circus Atari is even harder than Breakout with this joystick, because the 'target' on your 'paddle' is even smaller....

Circus Atari is difficult no matter what controller you use!, be it the orignaly designed for paddles or joystick/joypad/keyboard. Its a shit game if you ask me.

Ive never liked that game becuase its just so damn hard (and crap anyway)

After going to this site I didn't really have a good opinion on the "system in a joystick" games, but you've obviously made a good choice. I'm going to look into this since my Atari is on permanent loan to my cousin.

Shit? My beloved Circus Atari? One of my favorite games of all time? Bah!

I second the motion for screenshots of the game! :D

Those joysticks with built in games have been available around here for a couple years now. 10 is the lower end one, there's one that has 20 or 30 games in. I saw both available in a local truck stop (it's rather scary how much entertainment based stuff that's marketed toward truck drivers, to think that some guy is probably playing a playstation or watching video tapes while driving a 20 ton rig down the road......). (For those of you in europe, truck/rig refers to a lorry.)

Here's a couple sites about the 10-in-1 version:
Gamestop
8bit joystick.com

The system's main menu.

(please keep in mind that all screenshots have been made with the help of a TV card, thus the blurriness)
